The first Songcamp took place at the Glenghorm Resort in Ingonish, Cape Breton from August 9 – 12, 2010. Seven writers between the ages of 15 and 24 co-wrote in excess of 10 songs over three days during sessions facilitated by Gordie and Steve MacDougall (Slowcoaster). The camp culminated in a sold-out Songwriter Circle, where each of the writers showcased their original material and songs that they co-wrote together during the camp. In 2011, Songcamp returned to the Glenghorm Resort and welcomed back six first-year songwriters and six new writers. From July 30 – August 5, they co-wrote over 30 songs, demoed 14 songs and gave another outstanding live performance during the Songwriter Circle. Songcamp grew again in 2012; Carleton Stone became our third leader (alongside Gordie and Steve), we added six new writers and invited songwriters from the previous two years – for a total of 25 songwriters, leaders, and volunteers at Songcamp. We changed our location to the beautiful Keltic Lodge Resort the same year and hosted the Songwriter Circle at Ceilidh Hall to enthusiastic crowds. We welcomed four new writers in 2013, including singer-songwriter Carmen Townsend, and 12 returning writers. Gordie, Steve, and Carleton lead the songwriting sessions, and mentored Dylan Guthro for a leadership role at Songcamp in 2014. Having artists from all genres – rock, rap, country, folk, and R&B – made for an exciting Songwriter Circle at Keltic Lodge, for the performers and the community. Songcamp gives songwriters the opportunity to develop artists skills and build relationships with their peers, making our province a more vibrant and sustainable place for youth in the music business. Our vision for Songcamp is to promote learning in pursuit of artistic excellence and for songwriters to discover more about who they are as artists and how they can contribute to their music communities through collaboration. The Gordie Sampson Songcamp is made possible by the generous support from the Nova Scotia Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage; Music Nova Scotia; The Ceilidh Cup, and the Bell Media Canadian Songwriting Challenge.

+   add 2016-11-04 19:152016-11-04 20:30America/Glace_BayHorse Rath Eastlink Community Centre, 625 Abenaki Road, Truro Nova Scotia B2N 0G6Nova Scotia Music Weekinfo@musicnovascotia.cafalseYYYY-MM-DDapWLBuxnYzgmsEMzKmbm19287The Music Most bands start out learning and performing cover songs – music made popular by other bands - before embarking on their own writing projects and this was the case with Horse. Their repertoire of covers was chosen from a long list of groups who were “hot” in the 70’s – The Allman Brothers, The Band, Chicago, Jethro Tull, Johnnie and Edgar Winter, The James Gang, Dreams and many more. The original music that Horse plays was written as a group. Musical ideas were shared freely and each musician in the band made his own significant contribution to the end product. Most times the songs were composed from these basic ideas brought to rehearsals by the band members and then worked on as a group – on some rare occasions a band member would bring in a complete song and then it was a matter of each player adding his part. In the early years, there were just a few songs written – Together, and Forgotten Woman were two of the most memorable. It was when Paul Barrett, Abbey Aucoin and later Gregg “Phisch” Fancy became part of the group that the writing really started to happen in a big way. Wayne Nicholson remained the sole lyricist and melodist (the one who wrote the melodies) for the group as well as the person responsible for song titles. The recording industry in Nova Scotia was just starting to take off around the time that the band broke up, so the only “commercial” recording of the band was a single 45-rpm vinyl disc on Big Ear Records. The A-side of this record was Broken Wings a catchy tune with a jazzy tenor saxophone solo in the middle. The B-side was a song called You Were Gone – a piano-heavy recoding that has a great rock groove. Although Horse songs are all different stylistically, there are certain grooves and tempos that the material can be loosely categorized into. For example the four ballads: Next Time Around, The Rise and Fall, Thinking Of You and Lady Graceful all were quite different from each other although the same in that they were slow songs - or waltzes as they were called in the ‘70s. Southend Sadie, No Need To Explain and Collection could be said to be rock shuffle. There are also the driving rock tunes like Drive Me Crazy, Gathering Storm and Leftover You. Among the most defining characteristics of Horse material were the longer multi-section compositions. The best known in this genre is Fisherman - a signature song of the band – that starts with a simple piano introduction which builds to a hard rock groove, goes into a 5/4 or odd-time signature section, which is followed by fast 3/4 finally returning to the hard rock groove for the ending. Several other Horse compositions have a similar format including Folly Mountain Breakdown. Named after the famous country style Foggy Mountain Breakdown, this 15 - minute suite written all in one weekend in a cottage at Folly Lake goes through several contrasting musical styles culminating in a powerful all stops out ending. Other titles in this longer style include Movin’ Along, Straight Ahead, It’s All Over and Blue Sky Ladies - all of which are entertaining, and at the same time musically complex. Horse fans will remember many of these titles and the band is looking forward to performing them again after so many years. Along with the comical Fly Soup, the jazzy Go Lightly, and the driving rock sound of After All This Time the material described above will be sure to delight everyone who makes it to the gigs.

He was raised in Truro, Nova Scotia by his mother Pam, and father, veteran Canadian Bluesman Dutch Mason. His quest to become a blues musician started at a very early age; being surrounded by blues music, Garrett’s favorite tapes at three years old were Canned Heat and Buddy Rich. What really sealed the deal for Garrett to become a blues guitarist came after watching a video of Stevie Ray Vaughn “Live at the El Mocambo” -- he was hooked. His dad, Dutch Mason, stopped playing guitar before Garrett was born due to crippling arthritis in his hands. Although he was not able to teach his son to play, he has certainly been able to teach Garrett the structure of the Blues and to influence him about the resulting sound. Surrounded by his father’s peers, Garrett has had the benefit of hearing and learning from a wide variety of musical talent. The late Rick Jeffery was a great inspiration to Garrett; they would talk and play for hours together. Rick once said “Garrett is the only guitar player I know that can play Albert Collins’ style down to a T”. The combination of his father’s advice, Jeffery’s guidance, and his own natural talents provide that special brew for Garrett to become the musical influence he is destined to be. Garrett would be the first to tell you that riding the coattails of others won’t take you very far in this business, but striving to be truly original is the secret to longevity and lasting success. Garrett launched his debut CD "I’m Just a Man" at the 2004 Harvest Jazz and Blues festival in Fredericton, New Brunswick to a sold-out crowd. This debut CD features Garrett’s talent for strong original songs, a voice that is reminiscent of a veteran performer and his extraordinary aptitude for playing electric guitar. Garrett’s original talent was awarded in 2005 when he received a Juno for Best Blues Album. Garrett Mason is poised to be one of the brightest stars to emerge from the East Coast Blues scene in years. Garrett’s band released their sophomore album "Love and Sound" in July 2008, which was nominated for a Juno Award. The album won Blues Artist of the Year and Group Recording of the Year at the 2009 Music Nova Scotia Music and Industry Awards.
